After eight years in the planning stages, Johnny Depp project The Rum Diary finally began shooting in Puerto Rico this week. The Hollywood heavyweight was spotted on set in a straw hat and suit to play washed up freelance journalist Paul Kemp.
As the story – which is adapted from Hunter S Thompson's novel of the same name - unfolds, Paul finds himself at a turning point in his life after leaving New York behind to work for a run-down newspaper on the Caribbean island.
Johnny first expressed an interest in adapting the book for the big screen in 2000, but shelved the idea after issues with funding and casting. Benecio Del Toro also planned to direct a version in 2003 but later abandoned the project. In 2007 Warner Brothers finally stepped in with funding, and the film was given the green light.
The Rum Diary is 45-year-old Johnny's second Hunter S Thompson project. In 1998 he starred in cult hit, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, which was adapted from another of the author's books.
