Monday August 9, 2010

Academy Award-winning actress Patricia Neal died on Sunday at her home in Edgartown, Massachusetts. She was 84 years old.

Born Patsy Lou Neal in Packard, Kentucky in 1926 the young actress got her start in the theatre performing in numerous plays on Broadway and winning a Tony Award for her performance in Another Part of the Forest.

After her move to Hollywood, she starred in such films as Hud, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and The Fountainhead.

It was in the latter that the 23-year-old met co-star Gary Cooper with whom she fell in love and had a three-year affair.

Shortly after the relationship ended with the Hollywood icon, she met British writer Roald Dahl who she married in 1953. The couple had five children together.

In 1965 the actress suffered a brain aneurism that left doubt whether she would be able to act again but she made a strong comeback and starred in The Subject was Roses in 1968.

The actress spent much of her later career working to raise money for those suffering from brain injuries and the Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center at the Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center was opened in her honour in 1978.
