Roman Abramovich and girlfriend Dasha see in New Year in style with St Barts bash

03 JANUARY 2013

With a bank balance that reportedly sits around £8.4 billion, Roman Abramovich is used to the best, and the Russian tycoon didn't disappoint when it came to organising his annual New Year's Eve party in St Barts.

Invites to the soiree thrown by Roman and his girlfriend Dasha Zhukova are the most coveted party invitation of the year, and in the past the soiree has featured performances from high-profile stars such as The Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce and Prince.

To see out 2012, however, Chelsea FC's owner outshone his previous extravaganzas by spending more than £5 million on 400 guests who had gathered at his 70-acre Caribbean paradise, the Gouverneur Bay Estate. Taking pride of place on the guest list was Wendi Murdoch – who is the wife of media tycoon Rupert and a good friend of Dasha's.

The two women lead the social introductions under the balmy skies of St Barts and mingled with guests including US domestic goddess Martha Stewart, Australian actress Melissa George, her music producer boyfriend Russell Simmons, and Star Wars creator George Lucas.

Guests grazed on luxury food stations serving the finest local produce, whilst the catering staff provided an endless flow of Cristal champagne and ice-cold vodka. This year's entertaining duties fell to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers

For the climax of the big night, the starry skies of St Barts were bathed in the lights of a dazzling firework display which could be seen for miles around the tropical paradise.

Most of the singers, models, actors and business elite who were in town for what the locals casually dubbed "a little party" were hosted on Roman's 536ft long super-yacht, Eclipse, shown above.

The sleek boat, which is the world's largest private yacht and boasts two helicopter pads, two swimming pools, a submarine for underwater adventures, had been meticulously prepared for weeks by a fleet of staff.
