Born in Glasgow to Irish parents, Joe landed his first TV acting role aged 12 after being recommended by his drama teacher for a role in an episode of mystery series Taggart. Immediately bitten by the acting bug, the talented youngster went on to win parts in TV series The Crowe Road and Sex, Chips And Rock'n'Roll. Between TV commitments he appeared in theatre productions of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - in Edinburgh - and the West End musical Rent. But it was his role as a dishy village policeman in long-running drama series Heartbeat, which he landed in 2007, that truly propelled him into the public eye. The actor, who also appeared alongside Judi Dench in award-winning period drama Cranford, lives in London and in his spare time enjoys rollerblading and playing the guitar.
