Having a mother who once ran the famed Lee Strasberg drama school and the sort of classic blonde looks that make casting directors sit up and take notice, it's no surprise Sienna Miller became a movie star. Add a stormy relationship with one of the silver screen's most high-profile heartthrobs and an original fashion sense to the mix, and you have a winning formula for Hollywood success.
Sienna was born in New York to American banker Ed and his glamorous South African wife Jo.
Growing up in London the young girl was in no doubt as to where her future lay, later commenting: "I've wanted to be an actress for as long as I can remember, and I can say I was almost born in the theatre.
"My mum went into labour while she was watching the Nutcracker Suite in New York – apparently I was kicking like mad!"
Educated at an exclusive Ascot boarding school, Sienna returned to New York to study acting and made her film debut in 2001's South Kensington, alongside Rupert Everett and Rupert Everett and Elle Macpherson.
However, it was not for another three years that she really made her mark, winning praise for her role alongside Daniel Craig in 2004 flick Layer Cake and starring in Alfie alongside Primrose Hill hunk Jude Law.
The couple's on-screen relationship soon blossomed into a real life romance, and the glamorous pair made headlines with the news of his proposal on Christmas Day 2004.
However, as Sienna's star rocketed her love affair with Jude waned. In May 2005 the Talented Mr Ripley actor admitted to cheating on his fiancée with his children's nanny, and she called off the engagement.
The pair tried to patch up their romance on various occasions, with one significant reconciliation in 2009, but the roller-coaster relationship finally ground to a halt the following year, with both admitting it was truly over.
After Alfie came solid roles in The Edge of Love, chronicling the life and loves of poet Dylan Thomas with Kiera Knightley and Factory Girl about Andy Warhol's muse Edie Sedgwick, to whom she bore an extraordinary resemblance.
"I think it's startling how accurate Sienna is," said the film's director George Hickenlooper.
Having directed several leading ladies at the start of their careers – including Naomi Watts and Renée Zellweger – George considered Sienna one of the most talented.
"She evokes the same kind of emotional response that I imagine Edie did," he enthused. "She's got so much charisma and effervescence."
Long before anyone could name any of her films, Sienna's wardrobe and boho sense of style had already landed her in fashion magazines, and for five years she headed her own label, Twenty8Twelve, with her sister Savannah.
In July 2012, aged 30, she bagged the most important role of her life. Becoming a mother for the first time, Sienna gave birth to a little girl Marlowe, whose father is On the Road actor Tom Sturridge, best friend of Robert Pattinson.
